2011/11/28

Conversation, message from a friend:

Are you in support of such intervention? Video clip shows the announcement of the formation of the “Free Anbar Brigade to support the Syrian People” in Iraq in its two operations targeting buses transport Sadr’s “Mahdi Army” to Syria [as the Brigade claims] escorted by the Iraqi regular Army.

Earlier this week Anbar’s Governor Qasim Al-Fahdawi said that he has evidence of armed members of the Mahdi Army are transported to Syria to help the Assad regime against the rebels.

Syrian oppositions claim that 100 buses carrying at least 4,500 armed Sadr’s militias crossed the border the Syrian border, headed towards the Deir Al-Zour city.

Russia want to intervene as it does have economic interests in Syria, – In September 2008, it was agreed that Tartous should be developed into a full a naval base and the first stage of development and modernization will be completed in 2012. As a naval base, it could serve as a base for guided-missile cruisers and even aircraft carriers. Russia’s weapon sales could be seen as part of the strategic moves by Moscow to take care of their intersts . Its only naval base in Mediterranean is located in Syria. Moscow is aware that if Assad’s regime is toppled, its weapons sales, naval base and strategic national security interests could be jeopardized.

Adel Gosaibat – Do you Obama wil risk nuclear war ? The Russian Kuznetzov carrier and its accompanying strike vessels will join the three Russian warships parked opposite Tartus for more than a week. It will enter the same Syrian offshore waters as the USS Bush and the US Sixth Fleet, which is permanently posted in the Mediterranean. The Syrian crisis is therefore building up to a superpower face-off unparalleled since the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union ended in the nineties, The rise of this anti-American narrative among Bahrain’s pro-government Sunnis can be traced back, ironically, to a March 7 protest in front of the U.S. embassy in Manama organized by Shia political activists. Those present condemned the muted if not outright hostile American response to their then still-hopeful popular revolution. A seemingly trivial detail of that demonstration — a box of doughnuts reportedly brought to the protesters by the embassy’s then-Political Affairs Officer, who had ventured outside to hear their complaints — provided fodder some weeks later for a widely-circulated online article portraying the official as a veritable enemy combatant. Photographs of him and his family, along with his local address and phone number, would soon appear on militant Salafi forums, where readers were urged to take action against this Hezbollah operative. Within a few weeks, the U.S. embassy had a new Political Affairs Officer; the old one had been very quietly sent home.

Syria produced around 350000 barrels per day (bpd) before the unrest of which about a third was exported.
It’s highly revealing to note the following comments in the « Voice of Russia » website article:
  • ‘…It is critically important for Russia now to prevent social upheavals from reaching its strategic partners Algeria and Syria, says the expert, and adds:
  • « Both countries, especially Syria, ensure Russia’s geopolitical presence in the region. Russia can use its contacts with the countries in question to influence the regional situation in general. »
  • Algeria and Syria are important because they buy large amounts of Russian arms. Russia is currently supplying its Bastion mobile coastal missile complex complete with Yakhont anti-ship missiles to Syria. Bastion is a powerful weapon system that falls under no international restrictions. If carried out, the contract will create a precedent, since Russia will then be able to export its high-tech weapon systems. According to experts, it is possible, but quite difficult to reorient Russian arms exports, since it has taken this country years, and even decades, to establish lasting relations with its trade partners. ‘
So there we have it – the official voice of Russia is clear about OPPOSING democracy and liberalization in either Algeria or Syria because of their own commercial interests in selling weaponry and munitions.
This is, of course, the same Russian state whose respect for human rights in Chechnya is now a textbook case in human rights’ abuse and war crimes.
I look forward to the outpouring of rage against the Russians from many CiF commentators and to the waves of protest demonstrations outside the Embassy of the Russian Federation in London… Oh, yes, pigs will fly! –
